Post-reconstruction era disenfranchisement laws continue to hinder political participation in 2017, excluding millions of Americans from our democratic process by stripping voting rights from those with criminal convictions.

This practice varies widely across the 50 states, rendering the contours of the fundamental right of citizens to vote elastic, inconsistent, and uncertain. Some states impose a forever punishment, even on those who have served their time, while other states never disenfranchise their citizens. There are also a range of policies requiring past offenders to satisfy financial debts before voting--which, given the racial and economic disparities among former incarcerates, is difficult to distinguish from a poll tax.

This CLE will explore US criminal disenfranchisement policy and the laws that perpetuate it, along with its origins, and the future of rights restoration. We hope you will join us for this important presentation.

*Two NYS Professional Practice CLE credits are pending approval by the NYS CLE board. This live course is appropriate for both newly-admitted and experienced attorneys. Limited discounted seating for non-attorneys is available.

Current NYU law students are welcome to attend free of charge, but due to limited seating, we ask that any current NYU law students who plan to attend PLEASE RSVP by emailing LawyersCouncilCLE@gmail.com and provide your full name and mobile #.

NYDLC has a scholarship policy for those interested in attending but who are unable to pay due to financial hardship. To RSVP for a scholarship ticket, please contact LawyersCouncilCLE@gmail.com and provide your full name and mobile #. By seeking a scholarship, you are affirming in good faith that it would cause you financial hardship to pay for a ticket to this program.

Professor Browne-Marshall will also be available to sign copies of her book The Voting Rights War.
